This is just another fun experiment with the air fryer. It's really only your imagination that stops you when it comes to desserts with pastry in the air fryer. Give this one a go and then swap out the fillings for your favouirte things.
When we originally stumbled on this idea online, the smart people doing it were using pre-made individual tart pastry cases. Failing being able to grab any of those, we discovered that you can, in fact, use pre-made vol-au-vent pastry cases too, and they work perfectly well.
Ingredients
1 x 4 pack of store bought vol-au-vent shells
½ tin of top'n'fill nestle caramel (about 200g)
1 x tablespoon of Tia Maria (or any liqueur of your choice)
1 x banana sliced thinly
marshmallows, for topping
Method
Place banana slices all around the inside edge of the vol-au-vent cases – stand them up so that they cook a little quicker.
Mix the caramel and the Tia Maria until well combined. Pour the caramel into the vol-au-vent cases and fill almost to the top, covering the banana. Place the pastries into the air fryer and cook at 180°C for 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, slice the marshmallows in half horizontally. Open the air fryer, add the marshmallows as a layer on top of each pastry case and cook for another 3-5 minutes or until the marshmallow is puffed, soft and browned. Serve hot and break open to watch the caramel melt out.
